Special Education Exams

There are three types of SPED placements, each of which has different requirements for Initial and Standard Certificate issuance.  In order to be issued an Initial Certificate (e.g. Intern Certificate), the Candidate must pass all content area exams before being placed on the certificate.

Please see below for the applicable Candidate placements and the certification exams that must be taken and passed in order for issuance of a certificate.

Texas Administrative Code 223.8(a): “....The holder of the Special Education: Early Childhood-Grade 12 certificate may teach at any level of a basic special education instructional program serving eligible students 3-21 years of age…If an individual is providing content instruction in a special education classroom setting, a valid certificate that matches the subject and grade level of the assignment is also required, or the individual must demonstrate competency through the state's 2010 and 2011 high objective uniform State standard of evaluation for elementary and secondary special education teachers.”

In order for any certificate area/endorsement to be reflected on a Standard Certificate, it needs to also be reflected on the Initial Certificate (e.g. Intern or Probationary Certificate).  As with all Initial Certificates, all content exams must be taken and passed before issuance.
