mara Mattingly is an Instructional Coach with Teaching Excellence and a Social Work graduate student at the University of Houston. Her professional mission is two-fold: 1) to ensure new teachers have the knowledge, skills, and mindsets necessary to provide underserved students with an exceptional education, and 2) to achieve social, racial, economic, and political justice for all people. In pursuit of this mission, Amara has taught middle school math in Title I schools for five years at Tulsa ISD with Teaching for America, at YES Prep Public Schools in Houston, and at Uplift Education in Dallas-Fort Worth. She has also coached new teachers with Teaching Excellence for three years.
After earning her Master’s degree in Social Work, Amara plans to serve as a clinical counselor for at-risk students in schools to connect them and their families to needed services. Amara is especially interested in promoting Culturally Responsive Pedagogy in classrooms. Some of her recent work included capturing culturally-responsive teachers sharing their motivations and best practices.
In her free time, Amara spends time with her husband, walks her adorable corgi, reads excessively, and runs occasionally.
