my returned to her home city of Houston the summer after her junior year of college for a teaching internship at Breakthrough Collaborative, a program that trains high school and college students to teach in underserved communities. It was during this first teaching experience that she learned of the achievement gap and her passion for working to provide equal opportunities and a quality education for ALL students was ignited.
After graduating from the University of Texas in 2006, she began her career as a Teacher for America corps member at Public School 95 in the Bronx. After three years with the NYC Department of Education, she transitioned to Achievement First Public Charter Schools where she held a variety of roles at AF Bushwick Middle School. Amy has served as a 5th-8th grade science teacher, small group math and reading instructor, science department chair, and instructional coach. In 2015, she was named as an Achievement First Distinguished Teacher, an award she was both humbled and honored to receive.
In June of 2016, Amy and her husband, Mike Birk, left New York and moved to Texas and were grateful for the opportunity to join YES Prep Public Schools and work with incredible students, parents, and teachers in Houston. As an Instructional Coach at Teaching Excellence, Amy is driven to develop and support first-year teachers and accelerate their growth. She is a firm believer that a quality teacher can have a profound impact on a child's life and a consistent, quality education can break the cycle of poverty and the school-to-prison pipeline.
