akhala is fueled by the vision of providing a high quality, culturally responsive education to all students.  As a committed educator Makhala values connecting with students on an interpersonal level.  She believes in the power of recognizing and celebrating student’s backgrounds and heritages in their classrooms to boost student achievement.

She carried out this vision as a 2013 Teach for America Corps member teaching at KIPP 3D Academy and in her current role as an Instructional Coach with Teaching Excellence.  As an instructional coach, Makhala’s favorite part of the work is coaching teachers to bring their authentic selves to their classrooms while providing culturally responsive, high-quality education to their students. She does this by building transformative relationships with her teachers and empowering them to do the same with their students.

Originally from Oakland, California, Makhala graduated with a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Southern California. Her passion for education began in college during her volunteer work at local schools in Los Angeles.

Outside of work, Makhala enjoys spending time with her partner and their dogs, cooking, and making fun memories with loved ones.
