Friends of Teaching Excellence

With the new year comes new ambitions, commitments, and resolutions.  Yet, at Teaching Excellence we remain focused on a single commitment - Accelerating novice teacher effectiveness.  We already have so much to celebrate this year and look forward to the continued growth of the novice teachers we have the privilege to support. We’ve included below just a few of the highlights from the year thus far, with some updates on exciting new endeavors to follow:

Welcoming Teaching Excellence’s *most diverse teacher cohort to date during Summer Induction

Inaugurating two new district partners into our already amazing group of committed partners

* 81.2% of the 2018-2019 Teaching Excellence ACP candidates identify as a teacher of color

** National Council on Teacher Quality (2018). Teacher Prep Review.

Delivering on Our Promises:

  • We have onboarded and developed 311 novice teachers thus far in the 2018-2019 academic year, teaching across six district partnerships in Houston,

  • The Accelerating Teacher Effectiveness data initiative has enabled the Teaching Excellence team to capture, disaggregate, and analyze over 37,000 instructional data points of its novice teacher cohort this year, enabling the team to even more strategically respond to the needs of its teachers and accelerate their effectiveness, and

  • The Professional Learning and Instructional Coaching Leadership teams continue to provide high-quality Professional Learning Coaching Connection (PLCC) resources, which provide instructional coaching strategies connected to specific professional learning, for teacher educators and administrators

Raising the Bar:

  • We awarded 132 scholarships for certification exams & fees, transitional funding, and program costs, totaling over $71,000, to 97 candidates via the TE Scholarship Program.  The goal – To increase the diversity and persistence of the Teaching Excellence cohort (be sure to share this link with any potential applicants for the 2019-2020 academic year),

  • We are beginning the “planning phase” of developing a Transformation Center at Teaching Excellence, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, aimed at improving the support and development of alternative certification programs across the State of Texas,

  • We greeted two new district partners, Etoile Academy and Yellowstone Academy/College Prep, to the Teaching Excellence portfolio of districts committed to ensuring high-quality preparation of their novice teachers,

  • Teaching Excellence has partnered with Good Reason/Teach4Houston to promote the recruitment of high-quality talent into the profession and encourage high-quality educator preparation programs across the region, and

  • The Teaching Excellence Program Team were accepted to present at the annual Consortium of State Organizations for Texas Teacher Education and National Association for Alternative Certification conferences

Please note - You will receive communication soon about enrolling candidates in the upcoming ‘19-’20 academic year.  We remain grateful for each of you and your continued support of Teaching Excellence
